Roy Ayers Farewell Tour: Shepherd's Bush Empire, London 5/5/23

It sounds like a cliche, but without Roy Ayers so many of the records I grew up listening to wouldn't have seen the light of day. His influence seeps through so many of the great neo-soul records - he features on Erykah Badu's "Mama's Gun" and Jill Scott's "Who Is Jill Scott?" - and his distinctive jazz-soul style can draw a crowd.

By my count, this is the seventh time I've seen the Godfather of Neo-soul perform. The DJ warming up for the legendary artist asks how many in the audience have seen him before, and is met with a sea of hands. That's a testament to the esteem Ayers is held as one of the great figures of the soul world. But, at the age of 82, this tour will be the last time to catch him after he announced it would be his last.

Shepherd's Bush Empire was understandably packed to say farewell to an icon. As with previous shows, his tracks take on a life of their own with a group of incredible musicians flanking Ayers, sitting at his trademark vibraphone.

"Searching" became a sprawling jazz-funk jam with an astonishing sax solo by Casey Benjamin. The smile barely left Ayers's face throughout an enjoyable set which showcased the incredible footprint he's left from an amazing career.

"Everybody Loves The Sunshine" was predictably met with a massive reaction, the 50-year-old track bringing a feelgood vibe to West London.

There's one final London show to come at Cross the Tracks festival but for many in the crowd, it was a chance to say an appreciative goodbye to an icon.

Having left behind some musical gems that sound through the generations, the audience will be wishing Ayers a long and happy retirement.
