Brooklyn Funk Essentials: The Forge Camden 20/10/2023

Brooklyn Funk Essentials put in a mighty fine and solid performance in front of their loyal followers and fans. The sound was particularly good too.The spacious environs of the Forge seemed preferable to the cramped Jazz Cafe, (both Camden venues) where they last played.

Their ineffable funkiness always seems to prevail - there’s no stopping them, form is temporary and class is permanent and these guys are a classy act in anyone’s book. Mainly drawing repertoire from their last two albums, ‘Intuition’ and ‘Funk Aint Ova’ proved popular. The highlights of the set being ‘Blast It’ and ‘Double AA side single’ with its spacey funk synth and jerky riddims that sounded right on the money.

The ever jovial, lead singer, Alison Limerick, was on fine vocal form as well, gliding through her top register effortlessly whilst gearing up towards her big hit, ‘Where Love Is’ which transported half the crowd into pure 90’s nostalgia. Sound sculpturist and keys player got that cheap acoustic piano sound off to a T. Lati Kronund’s trusty P bass kept things buoyant as well and with a tight, effusive horn section BFE delivered a fine show proving themselves to be fine purveyors for their funk fellowship who follow them feverishly. It’s good to see that they continue to perform and record new music too, keeping the spirit of funk alive with their infectious grooves and vibrant energy.
