Spice'n'Space, an Israeli jazz-funk group, was formed when flautist, composer, and arranger Mattan Klein and drummer Uria Mader met serendipitously in a Tel Aviv club. United by their shared passion for jazz, fusion, and funk music, they joined forces to create a fun musical experience.
Their debut album, "The Funk Thing," showcases eight original compositions. Drawing inspiration from the classic funk of The J.B's and the late 60's recordings of Lou Donaldson and Grant Green, as well as the sophisticated harmonies of Herbie Hancock and the modern grooves of say, Vulfpeck.
Spice'n'Space strikes a pleasing balance between the old and the new, the simple and the sophisticated in a relaxed funky fashion. According to Klein, "The Funk Thing" presents a fresh and innovative approach to funky jazz, with a special emphasis on the flute (who doesn’t love jazz flute!) but within the context of groove and funk.
The album blends old-school moves with subtle hints of pop and reggae elements, all the while paying homage to vintage keyboard and drum sounds. The result is nothing new but it’s a captivating and refreshing mix that really cuts the mustard.
The opener, bass-driven "The Thang" definitely has that JB’s thing going on with that Jimmy Nolen-type guitar pattern reigning supreme and the flute lets rip in a cool manner, topped off by a great guitar solo as well.
The Prince vibe of "What’s The Use Of Falling" is a standout track. The feel of the ensemble work shows that this unit can groove and build on tracks effortlessly.
They also display their love of jazz-funk with the incisive "Found It - Keeping It!" Where sensibly, they give the drummer some in the shape of slinky breakbeats - wise move! This is a promising debut full of well-arranged and thought-out tunes.
