Smith & The Honey Badgers : Shadows b/w Nothing lasts for ever

When not spicing it up with The Allergies, effusive singer Marietta Smith, fronts her own band giving us some fine, deep soul cuts that hit the sweet spot.

Side 1 ‘Shadows’ is touch of old school blessedness horn laden and heart wrenching soul. This band cooks whilst Side 2 shows off a very sophisticated and well arranged slow disco stomp bolstered by a string arrangement to die for. Well crafted and a touch of Lisa Stansfeid gives it gloss.

It’s released on Funk Night Records Detroit, an independent record label based in Detroit, Michigan who have released this on 45. The label is run by Frank Raines, (also known as DJ Frank Raines), and he admirably maintains the goal of releasing and promoting funk, soul, and R&B music.

Through such releases as this, he continues to contribute to the ongoing legacy of this influential genre by putting this absolute pearl out. Suffice to say, Smith & The Honey Badgers are a touch of class.
